Kyu Testing at VWA seminars

Testing for kyu grades, 5th kyu to 1st kyu, is possible at Vancouver West Aikikai seminars. All test candidates must be registered participants in the CAF, with their dues paid up.

VWA students should note that kyu tests are sometimes held during regular classes, instead of at seminars. The dates for these in-class tests are often near seminar dates. If in doubt, please ask a senior member of the dojo.

In order to test at a seminar, the following are required:

  1. Vancouver West Aikikai must be notified in advance of your intent to test.
  2. CAF Application for Promotion form
  3. CAF Testing Requirements Document for the kyu level to be tested:
  4. Payment

Advance Notification

Vancouver West Aikikai must be notified of your intent to test, at least two weeks before the seminar.

VWA students should speak to Liz McKinlay or Bruce Riddick. Actually, it is best to do this two months or more before the seminar, so that you will have time to prepare for the test.

For candidates from other dojos, the candidate's instructor should send an email to [email protected] with a copy to Liz McKinlay, [email protected]. The email should include:

  • The candidate's name.
  • The rank to be tested for.
  • The date of the candidate's last test.
  • The number of days of practice since the last test.
  • The dojo name.

The CAF forms are fillable PDF forms. Acrobat Reader seems to work best for completing these forms.

The two forms should be filled in, printed, and signed before the seminar. They must be submitted to the testing coordinator at the start of the seminar. Forms will only be accepted from candidates who have provided advance notification and been accepted by the Grading Panel. All forms must be typewritten with no handwriting except for signatures.

Where an instructor's signature is required, your current instructor must sign.

On the CAF Application for Promotion form, Name should be as it appears on the dojo list from the CAF.

Date present rank obtained should be the actual date of your last test. Leave this blank if you are testing for 5th kyu.

Number of days of practice since last test is the number of days on which you have practiced; adjust this to the expected number you will reach by the test date. Candidates for 5th kyu should enter the number of days of practice since they started Aikido. Enter the same number as Hours Practiced on the kyu test sheet.

CAF test fee is $10 for kyu tests. Also enter this amount at the bottom of the kyu test sheet.

Candidates pay an examination fee and a promotion fee. Payment must be submitted in advance of testing.

The examination fee is $15 and is non-refundable; this fee is payable by cash or cheque made out to Vancouver West Aikikai. The CAF promotion fee is $10; this fee is payable by cheque made out to the Canadian Aikido Federation. The promotion fee is returned if the candidate fails.

Candidates expecting to test can withdraw at any time before the test date. However, they should inform the testing coordinator and Liz McKinlay as soon as possible.
