| 2. Shodo Equipment/ Shodo Kit |
The basic Shodo kit consists of a couple of Japanes brushes (fude) to write with (a larger one for doing the calligraphy itself, a smaller one for writing one’s name), an ink stick (sumi) that needs to be ground and mixed with water to become fluid ink, an inkstone (suzuri) used for grinding the ink and mixing it with water, a desk pad (shitajiki) that is made out of felt or some other material and that is placed underneath the sheet of paper during the writing process to absorb the ink, a paper weight (bunchin) to hold the paper in place during the writing, and rice paper (washi) to write on.
