Introduction to Aikido, New Beginners' Program
Our beginners' program offers a gentle introduction to Aikido, and is exclusively designed for beginners to learn basic concepts and Aikido technqieus and movements at a slower and comfortable pace. Experienced male and female instructors and assistants will assist beginners to acquire introductory knowledge of the Art, body awareness, and basic Aikido techniques in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
Vancouver West Aikikai offers a Beginners' Program at the West Point Grey Community Centre. Please check the class schedule for class times and fees
No regular members will attend the beginner class without approval of Ishiyama Sensei or the program coordinator.

The focus of the beginners class will be on Ukemi
(receiving of techniques), Taisabaki (body movements)
and Kihon Waza (fundamental techniques).

Beginners will train and progress together each term (i.e., fall, winter, spring, and summer terms). Those who meet the minimum attendance requirement (12 classes) will receive a Level One Introductory Certificate at the end of their first term, and then a Level Two Introductory Certficate after additional 12 or more classes in the following term.
Please note, anyone wishing to start in the beginner class needs to wear appropriate attire:
- Loose fitting clothing (such as sweats) with long sleeves and long pants. The clothing should cover both the knees and elbows.
- No jewelries can be worn during classes
- If you have a gi (judo or karate style uniform) you can wear that, as long as it is white top and bottom, with a white belt. The gi should have no patches or insignias.
